I think you're confusing 1Time and Kulula with SAA's cross-subsidised Mango service. Budget operators are amongst the only airlines making real cash internationally (think Ryanair, easyJet, Southwest Airlines, etc.). Without SAA's anticompetitive behaviour Kulula and 1Time are both very profitable.
